DIY 08: Chalkboard Picture Frame Sign

Here is an easy DIY for reminders, notes or even simple messages. Chalkboards are becoming more and more popular in the home. Last year I made these chalkboard coasters. I had a little chalkboard paint left over so I thought I would turn a picture frame into a chalkboard sign.

First, pick up a picture frame that you like. You can buy one or you can use one you already have. Don’t like the colour? Spray paint can fix that. I found this super cute bird picture frame at Winners but I didn’t like its distressed look. I gave it a couple of coats of high gloss grey for a more modern look. Of course, I took out the glass and picture part before painting.IMG_2699IMG_2704

For the chalkboard part I used the backing that holds the picture in the frame. Most frames come with a nice thick backing that should work good for painting. If its flimsy you can pick up a thin piece of MDF at a hardware store, you may even find thin wood at craft stores depending on the size of your frame. Give the backing a good two or three coats of chalkboard paint, until it’s completely covered.IMG_2705

Once both pieces have dried for the recommended time, put it all back together leaving out the glass. You want the chalkboard part to be inside the frame so you can write on it. It can be used in the kitchen, office or mudroom to leave special messages to your loved ones!
